CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
My current position is Consultant Neuroradiologist at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol and the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. I have been a consultant since 2003 following a two year fellowship in adult and paediatric neuroradiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen’s Square, London and the Hospital for Children, Great Ormond Street.
Frenchay Hospital is a major acute neurosurgical unit treating a large volume of patients including head injury and spinal cases. I have a wide experience of imaging in all aspects of adult diagnostic neuroradiology, reporting over 4000 MR and CT studies per annum.
I have a specialist interest in the imaging of the brain and spine in neonates and children, for which I have sessions at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Bristol has a large paediatric neuroscience service, covering the West and South West regions. I take the weekly paediatric neurology/neurosurgery MDT meeting in which cases from the region are reviewed.
I have an interest in the imaging of neonatal brains and support the two level III neonatal units in Bristol, which have a national reputation for research into neonatal brain injury in preterm and term infants, incuding the TOBY and DRIFT trials.
I also have an interest in fetal brain MRI and it’s ability to advise on potential fetal brain malformations in early pregnancy, and I am responsible for providing this service to the South West region.
I have a special interest in the imaging of paediatric brain cancer and supervise diagnostic and follow up imaging and take the twice monthly MDT.
I also have an interest in the imaging of paediatric and adult epilepsy and have set up advanced imaging services with high field 3 Tesla MR scanning to detect focal brain abnormalities not seen by conventional MRI. I have also set up a functional MRI service for presurgical mapping of motor and language functions in the brain prior to epilepsy and tumour surgery. In 2009 the adult epilepsy program won a national health and social services award in the Transforming Services category.
MEDICOLEGAL PRACTICE
I have been preparing reports for legal firms and the Courts for four years and in the last two years I have written reports in 100 cases. I have assisted in adult and paediatric cases, including cerebral palsy and non-accidental injury. With my interest in neonatal imaging I have provided over 60 reports in cases of cerebral palsy secondary to birth injury for Claimant and Defendant. For non-accidental injury I have written over 40 reports and give oral evidence in Court, on average once every two months. I have prepared reports following joint instruction in care proceedings and also for the CPS/Police in adult and non-accidental injury cases. As part of my routine clinical work I regularly write reports for local authorities and the police in cases of suspected non-accidental injury admitted to the Bristol Hospitals and those within the South West region.
